Mazda must be feeling the crunch with the release of a cut price CX-60.

The CX-60 is the smallest of its new breed of SUVs which all arrived at a substantially higher price than preceding models.

There's the CX-60, CX-70, CX-80 and CX-90, until now all hybrids of one kind of another.

It's all part of a new sales strategy and they all look alike, but it must present a difficult marketing proposition for the company.

Enter stage left a four cylinder version of the five-seat, mid-sized SUV priced from $44,240 -- a reduction of $6000 over its six-cylinder sibling.

It's the same 2.5-litre naturally aspirated engine that powers the current CX-5.

Until now CX-60 has been available only with six cylinder petrol and diesel hybrids, as well as a plug-in petrol hybrid powertrain -- priced from $50,240 through $81,490.

Mazda says the new offering will increase the appeal and affordability of the CX60 range.

The tried-and-tested G25 petrol unit is available with Pure, Evolve and Touring grades, with the entry CX-60 G25 Pure priced from $44,240.

As an introductory offer however the CX-60 G25 Pure will be available from $47,990 driveaway.

Model grades are unchanged when compared to their six-cylinder counterparts, which offer a host of technology, safety and performance as standard.

Delivering 138kW of power and 250Nm of torque to the rear wheels courtesy of the recently refined Skyactiv-Drive eight-speed automatic transmission, the Mazda CX-60 G25 boasts fuel economy as low as 7.5L/100km.

Entry-grade G25 Pure starts from $44,240, Evolve from $49,240 and Touring  from $52,240.

Introduced as a result of customer demand, Mazda says the value-focused G25 powertrain will account for one third of CX-60 sales annually.

Mazda Australia 's Vinesh Bhindi said the company had always prioritised providing unrivalled value and choice for our consumers.

"The addition of the G25 to the CX-60 range is no exception," he said.

"A proven powerplant, elegant KODO design and a suite of standard inclusions at an extremely compelling price point fully enhance consumer accessibility”.
