MG has opened the order books for its all-new MGU9 utility, but it's not an electric ute -- not yet at least.

The MGU9 is powered by a 2.5-litre turbo diesel just like utes used to be, but there is a fully electric version available . . . if required.

An example of badge engineering, the MG is a carbon copy of the LDV Terron 9, except for the suspension that has been engineered here in Australia for local conditions.

MG says the MGU9 has been designed with strength and versatility in mind, combining the practicality of a work-ready ute with the comfort and innovation of a modern SUV.

At 5.5 metres in length it will be larger than the Ford Ranger, but not as large as American full-sized utilities, with a 1000kg payload and 3500kg tow capacity.

Under the bonnet is a conventional 2.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine that develops 164kW of power and 520Nm of torque, while driving through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Although it will be four-wheel drive, it is not clear whether it is a full time this includes high and low range at this stage.

MG's said Kevin Gannon said the MGU9 marks a significant step for the company in Australia.

“The MGU9 has been designed for and tested on our demanding urban, highways, rural roads and trails to deliver the capability Australians demand from a ute, but with the innovation, comfort and value that MG has become known for," he said.

"We are now welcoming pre-orders with a $1000 MG OEM accessory offer for those customers excited to be among the first to experience the MGU9.”

Pricing and full specifications will be revealed closer to launch later in the year.

Key highlights include:

  • Robust chassis and engineering designed for both on-road refinement and off-road durability.
  • Advanced multi-link rear suspension for enhanced comfort, handling and stability.
  • 8-speed transmission and 4WD system that deliver confidence-inspiring performance both on and off-road.
  • Superior comfort interior with quality features and finishes in a spacious cabin that makes every drive effortless and reduces driver fatigue.
  • 3.5 tonne towing capacity built to handle whatever the journey demands – with an easy-access tub and a discreet rear foldable step for seamless entry and use
