Stunning MG Cyberster undergoes testing

They haven't set a date yet, but MG's futuristic Cyberster electric sports car is on its way to Australia.

The Cyberster is a recipient of a prestigious Red Dot Design Award.

It will be the first all-new MG convertible since the 1997 MG F (and the first Chinese one).

But it's an EV so don't expect it to be cheap.

The Red Dot Award is one of the world's longest-standing design competitions.

First presented in 1955 as Design Innovations, the Red Dot Award has been titled as such since 2000.

Each year, a jury of circa 50 internationally renowned experts select the best designs across three categories: Product Design, Brands & Communication Design, and Design Concept.

The stunning Cyberster is based on the 2021 concept car of the same name, with Lamborghini-like style scissor doors.

Unconventional LED tail lights feature large arrows in the vein of 70s bicycle lights.

Detail is a bit thin on the ground, but the sports car is 4535mm long and weighs from 1850kg to 1985kg, depending on configuration.

That means a choice of single, rear drive motor or dual-motor, all-wheel-drive.

The single-motor version generates 231kW of power while the dual-motor version develops a combined 400kW, with 0-100km/h taking less than four seconds.

MG Motor Australia's Peter Ciao said the Cyberster is a design that better represents where MG stands today and the direction it will head in the future.

“The Cyberster pays respects to 100 years of MG creating vehicles that people love to drive," he said.

"We don't think of ourselves as just car owners, it's more than that.

"These cars and MG are a part of history and we're lucky enough to be their custodians.

"A lot like a Swiss watch. You never really own it, you just keep this watch for the next generation.”

The MG Cyberster is currently being tested in Australia ahead of a launch later this year.

"So that's why I can still remember my first interview in Australia. ‘Yeah, MG relaunching in Australia to offer one more choice for Australian customer and I will try my best to do a professional job and keep this option as a better choice for Australian customers.'
