New Zed comes with plenty of cred

Excitement has a new name with Nissan's new Zed car now just a matter of weeks away.

Nissan has announced pricing and spec for the two-door coupe, with news a special launch edition will be offered.

The flagship Proto Spec is finished exclusively in Ikazuchi Yellow topped by a Super Black roof, and will be offered until sold out.

Proto Spec, with a bespoke interior and 19-inch bronze forged alloy wheels with yellow brake calipers, will be priced from $80,700.

The bad news is that Nissan Australia is already holding several hundred reservations.

The latest Zed remains true to the formula, with rear-wheel drive and the option of a close-ratio manual gearbox.

It's powered by a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 with variable valve timing, force-fed by small-diameter turbochargers, to maximise spooling speed and to balance power output and throttle-response time.

Peak power and torque rise to 298kW and 475Nm, the latter figure 31 per cent higher than its predecessor, ensuring exhilarating performance.

These enhancements improve the power to weight ratio by 13 per cent over the Zed’s much-loved predecessor and shave acceleration from 0 to 100km/h by approximately 15 per cent.

Zed’s six-speed close-ratio manual gearbox variant is paired with a high-performance clutch supplied by Japanese motor racing specialist Exedy, and linked to the rear wheels via a carbon-fibre composite driveshaft, downshift rev matching.

The optional nine-speed automatic gearbox is drive-by-wire for rapid response to inputs from the aluminium paddle-shifters and features two drive modes – standard and sport.

All automatic transmission-equipped models also feature launch control.

Standard kit includes a leather-accented interior, launch control, a fully customisable 12.3-inch TFT display, an 8.0-inch infotainment screen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smart-phone integration, and three driving modes – Standard, Enhanced and Sport – each one automatically optimising the information provided to the driver.

New Zed is expected to be on sale mid-year, priced from $73,300 plus on road costs.
