With the rollout of its CX-60, CX-70, CX-80 and CX-90, all of them hybrids, it wasn't looking too good for Mazda's best-selling but cheaper CX-5.

But, the CX-5 is about to enter it’s third generation, bringing with it advanced technology, unrivalled practicality and outstanding value for money for Australian families -- but alas no hybrid option.

In fact, all grades get the same naturally aspirated 2.5-litre four cylinder engine, with prices starting from $39,990 plus on roads.

That's pretty close to the cheapest CX-60 with the same power plant, which is now $44,240, plus on-roads.

Not including the CX-5 going forward, however, would have been akin to committing harakiri, given CX-5's popularity and the fact that it has topped sales for the last seven consecutive years.

Sluggish sales of the pricey hybrids haven't helped either.

Welcoming the "next-gen" CX-5, Mazda's Vinesh Bhindi said the CX-5 holds an esteemed status in Australia, and the next generation will continue to do the same.

"It brings even more advanced technology, significantly more practical SUV dimensions and is of course infused with the superb Jinba-Ittai driving dynamics Mazda is famous for – and we are extremely proud to offer this to Australian customers at an incredibly compelling price point,” he said.

The G25 2.5-litre Skyactiv G powertrain produces 132kW of power and 242Nm of torque and is paired with Mazda’s six-speed Skyactiv-Drive transmission, with all-wheel drive across the lineup.

It takes standard 91 unleaded and has claimed fuel consumption of 7.4L/100km.

CX-5 arrives mid-year and will be offered in five equipment-rich model grades: Pure; Evolve; Touring; GT SP and Akera.

Standard equipment includes:

  • 12.9-inch central infotainment touchscreen
  • 10.25-inch TFT LCD multi-information meter display
  • 17-inch alloy wheels
  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go function
  • Black cloth trim with 8-way manual driver’s seat adjustment
  • Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) with Turn Warning
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • LED headlights with auto on/off and High Beam Control (HBC)
